Automobile windshields are kept in place with a rubber gasket or seal and a metal strip or rubber molding which may deteriorate and require replacement. The removal of the windshield is usually not necessary, but may require special tools. The average backyard mechanic can secure the glass and replace the molding in about half an hour.
Explanation
- Secure the vacuum wand for pressing the suction cup windshield glass to glass and turning the knob or pressing the vacuum. The vacuum wand should be centered as much as possible while still allowing a firm grip on one side when the glass is removed.
- Remove the windshield center clip in the bottom center of the cup, which has the molding end-jointed. Pry the clip board, and slide one end of the molding, then the other.
- Remove the strip of molding pulling one end until you exit the rubber seal. Continue pulling the mold until the entire windshield, back to the central starting point is removed. When it leaves, the rubber gasket holding the glass can loosen, but do not release the windshield. Put a hand on the vacuum wand in case.
- Install new molding pressing one end on the bottom center of the windshield molding, and then push the trim into the groove of the board all the way around the windshield. The tool can help you board the deep molding press into the slot, with correct capacity. Work on the mold slowly and take your time; don’t rush the molding board could damage the glass, or both. As molding seats, use suction handle to gently push the glass and forth, giving space for mold to fit.
- Once the molds is around the bottom center of the screen slide the clip on one end, block at the other end of the strip of molding, and firmly press the clip on the board. Use the tool to work together on the clip deeply. Remove the vacuum wand windshield.
Tips & Warnings
- Make sure the molding is the exact same thickness as that being replaced – some manufacturers may differ, and may not fit the mold.
- Be very careful when working with glass windshield.
