How to stop windshield cracks

Windshield cracks often start with a chip on glass. This tends to happen when another vehicle kicks up a stone that flies back and hits your windshield. If you work on this chip immediately, sometimes you can stop the chip becomes a crack, or leaves a small crack from spreading further. This may only be a temporary solution, but you can buy some time until saving enough money to have the windshield replaced.

Explanation

  • Put the car in a heated garage if the weather is cold. Start with a completely dry windshield that is somewhere near room temperature. If necessary dry with a clean cloth or hair dryer.
  • Buy glue that can stop the crack. Glass shops and auto parts stores sell windshield repair kits that contain a specific type of glue. Simply fill a chip to stop a crack from the beginning; you can also use a high performance adhesive such as Super Glue or crazy glue.
  • Fill the windshield chip with glue. Inserting glue into the crack, follow the instructions on the kit package. Use the syringe-type applicator that comes with the kit.
  • Start at one end of the crack and fill with adhesive. Wipe off any excess glue with a little alcohol applied to a clean cloth.
  • Move slowly along the crack until it has filled the whole length with glue.

Allow the glue to dry for at least one hour and preferably for a few hours before driving any distance.
