Making a fiberglass piece

Fiberglass is extremely durable and is prone to rust or corrosion. It is a common thought that’s tedious work with fiberglass, but when you use it, you will realize that it is much easier to mold fiberglass to your requirement of metal or wood. Fiberglass objects are strong and robust, making them suitable to be widely used in the automotive industry and for many other purposes. Pieces of fiberglass are used at subwoofer enclosures, tanks, covers, body panels and many other things you can do for yourself. It will be a fun activity for fiberglass mold in different shapes and parts for home use.

  1. Before using fiberglass, first you have to make a model of the object you wish to create. You can use high density foam or cardboard to make a sculpture of the finished part which aims to be created.
  2. Be sure to take into account the size of the object, since the application layer of fiberglass sculpture is added to enlarged thickness and the finished product. However, you have the option of fiberglass until required size, but only to a degree of sand.
  3. Cover mold prepared with a layer of aluminum foil. Use tape to hold the paper firmly to the surface of the sculpture.
  4. Apply a coat of spray-on mold release spray or nonstick pan to prevent the blade sticks to the resin.
  5. Now you can lay the first layer of fiberglass over aluminum foil covered pan. Be sure to completely cover the fiberglass sheet before applying resin on the mold.
  6. Use a rolling pin to flatten the layer. This will also remove any air pockets or bubbles within the layer and the drying will result in a solid piece with the resin. Let fiberglass dry for several hours before proceeding to the next step.
  7. Now slowly remove the delicate sheet of fiberglass mold and ensure not to break or bend at all. You have to apply several layers of leaves inside the mold part to achieve the required thickness of the object. Trample each layer roller and then let it dry completely.
  8. Check the fiberglass object to the exact size you were looking for and then sanded to make the necessary adjustments. Use sandpaper grain hard for it and to soften the edges of the piece.
  9. You can use body filler to smooth outer surface. Grind the surface with sandpaper and then wipe with isopropyl alcohol.
  10. Use sprays paint the object fiberglass for your desired tone and applying at least two layers of paint on it.
